Rotterdam-based Joep van Lieshout is known for dissecting social systems and the human body through an imaginative aesthetic. Ballerina Lamp is a love letter to the classical dancers, whom the artist sees as living sculptures that explore the relationship between geometry and the body, through balance and dynamic movement. The angular rendering of this figure can be weaponised, with dangerous spikes that allude to the expression: “you lose an eye when you love a dancer.”
