The Entropy of Spaces – Oriente Green Campus

There are buildings that age slowly, like bodies that learn to live with their scars. There are others that seem to die before being born. They remain suspended in a strange time, between promise and abandonment, with their structure exposed, their skin unfinished, their program interrupted. They are not ruins in the romantic sense of the term. They do not yet possess the dignity of historical distance. They are recent, almost embarrassing ruins, made of concrete, debt, expectation, and silence. These buildings have always interested me. Perhaps because, as a proto-architect, strategist, and creative now at Saraiva + Associados, I look at architecture less as a succession of finished objects and more as a cultural practice made of continuities, detours, and reinterpretations. A building does not end when construction is finished. In fact, that is when it begins. It begins when it is used, opposed, appropriated, altered, forgotten, and, with luck, rediscovered. The theme that occupies me in this article is exactly that: the entropy of spaces. Not entropy as a decorative word to talk about disorder, but rather as a useful image to think about what happens when built form can no longer keep up with life. A space becomes entropic when it loses its use, when its material energy gets trapped in a program that no longer exists, when the city changes around it and it doesn't know how to change and evolve with it. But for this exercise, allow me another, alternative reading, more generous and (who knows) more interesting: a good design contains within itself a certain availability for change. A kind of fertile entropy. An internal openness that allows use to shift and evolve, that allows form to accept new needs, ensuring the building isn't condemned by the function that originated it. That is why the Oriente Green Campus seemed to me such a striking case to reflect upon this theme. Before being a campus, it was the unfinished structure of a shopping center whose construction stopped in 2012. For years, it stood there as an urban interruption: a built mass with no destination, a promise of consumption that was never fulfilled, a volume too large to quietly disappear and too present to be ignored. What could have been demolished was, instead, repurposed. It was transformed into an office, higher education, and innovation campus, designed by S+A in partnership with KPF. That is why the Oriente Green Campus seemed to me such a striking case to reflect upon this theme. I do not want to write about this project like someone presenting a technical fact sheet; I am interested in another angle: what does this building reveal about architecture's ability to work with what already exists, even when what exists seems to have failed? Perhaps even especially then. Entropy, in physics, tells us about irreversible processes, about energy that disperses, about systems that tend toward states of greater disorder. In architecture, the metaphor must be appropriated with care, because buildings and cities are not closed systems. They receive investment, maintenance, imagination, conflict, desire. They can be reprogrammed. They can learn. Stewart Brand wrote precisely about this in How Buildings Learn: buildings change in layers, and each layer has its own timeline. The site changes slowly. The structure too. The skin changes faster. Technical systems, interiors, and furniture even more so. This idea seems simple, but it has profound consequences. When we confuse all the layers, when we design a building as if everything in it had the same lifespan, we create rigidity. And rigidity is a form of future entropy. A program passes, technology ages, an organization changes, but the structure remains. If that structure only knows how to serve one hypothesis, it begins to die when that hypothesis ceases to be valid. The old concrete structure of the shopping center that is now the Oriente Green Campus, instead of being treated as waste, was recognized as a foundation. About 90% of the original structure was retained, avoiding approximately 20,000 tons of embodied CO₂. These numbers are important, but perhaps even more important is the principle they represent. The concrete was already there. The energy, the carbon, the matter, and the violence of its extraction had already been expended. To demolish would be to double the loss. To reuse was to accept that sustainability often begins with a less spectacular question: what can we choose not to destroy?
